'It was a little bit of a gamble' - Lukas Nmecha opens up on decision to join Leeds United in 2025
Lukas Nmecha has lifted the lid on his decision to join Leeds United in 2025
Lukas Nmecha has described his decision to join Leeds United in the summer of 2025 as “a little bit of a gamble”.
The 27-year-old forward was the first signing of Leeds’ post-promotion recruitment drive, arriving on a free transfer from Wolfsburg to bolster Daniel Farke’s attack.
He has since scored seven goals across 47 appearances, spending the bulk of his time at Elland Road as a back-up option behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Lukas Nmecha on Leeds United move
In an appearance on The Official Leeds United Podcast, Nmecha has lifted the lid on his return to British shores with Leeds.
He said: “Doors open and doors close - and it just kind of pointed towards Leeds. I spoke to Daniel, he was very convincing, obviously. [He said] just that it’s a massive club, a great opportunity for Premier League football. He’s obviously watched my journey and sees that I can help the team.
“It was a little bit of a gamble, I would say, to go to a newly-promoted side. But with it being Leeds, the history of the club and everything that Leeds was, it kind of made it a little bit easier for me to make that choice. I needed a change, because I’d had a such a tough time with injuries previously. It kind of just opened itself up.
“When you’re a free agent, it’s a lot easier, let’s say. I could have stayed in Germany, I could have stayed at my club there.”
Culture change
Nmecha is a product of Manchester City’s youth system and was exposed to senior EFL football during loan spells at Preston North End and Middlesbrough.
He settled back in Germany, the country of his birth, when he joined Wolfsburg from Manchester City in 2021. The frontman started strongly and broke into the Germany squad, only to find himself hampered by injury in the latter stages of his Volkswagen Arena stay.

Nmecha said: “As soon as I entered training, I thought this level is quite similar to where I’d come from. But as soon as we entered the game, it was a completely different thing.
“I think Germany and England are very different. Even the players in terms of character, they’re a lot more, I’ll say just vicious. I like it. We’ve got good players for that as well.
“We’ve got Ethan [Ampadu], where he’s the nicest guy ever, and then on a matchday it’s like ‘what’s going on here?’.”
