A special day out with family or friends

Setting out from York, The Waverley will stop at Leeds, Keighley and Skipton before joining the Settle & Carlisle Line at Settle Junction. From there one of the most arduous climbs on Britain’s railway network begins, a total of 15 miles mainly at a gradient of 1 in 100.

Watch out for the Three Peaks and Ribblehead Viaduct

Watch out along the way for splendid views of the Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough and the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, which will carry The Waverley high above the valley floor and on towards Blea Moor Tunnel.  The route passes through Dent Dale and the highest open station in England at Dent.  More lofty viaducts and tunnels follow and the train will ascend to Ais Gill Summit at 1,169 feet.

The Waverley visits Carlisle where passengers will have about two hours to explore the ancient Border City with its castle, cathedral, museum, shops and cafes, before rejoining the train for the steam journey home.

Treat yourself – dine on board

The Railway Touring Company’s travel options include Standard, with refreshments to purchase on board, or bring your own picnic, and First with light meals in the morning and afternoon served to you at your seat.
