City’s Lib Dems name replacement leader

LIBERAL Democrats on Sheffield Council have announced their new leader after the resignation of Paul Scriven following this month’s local elections.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed was elected by members of the Sheffield party at a meeting on Monday night and said he was “delighted” with the result.

Coun Scriven stepped down from the leadership immediately after the election, which saw his party lose nine seats and control of the council to Labour.

Labour now holds 49 seats compared to the Liberal Democrats’ 32. The Greens hold two seats and there is one independent member.

Coun Mohammed said: “There is no doubt that the local election results show the Liberal Democrats have a tough task ahead.

“Despite the fact that Labour took control of the council, more than half of people who voted in the local elections didn’t vote for them.”

“However, we can be proud of our local record and the people of Sheffield will remember this if the Labour councillors go back to their bad old ways.”
