Civic society aims to create park

A neglected and overgrown corner of Liversedge is to be transformed into a park thanks to a group of local people.

Sparrow Park will be created on land on the corner of Halifax Road and Knowler Hill.

Spen Valley Civic Society, set up in 1973 to help protect and enhance the local environment, is spearheading the £40,000 project.

The society’s chairman Max Rathmell said: “This park has been planned for many years and it is great to see it get underway. “Its creation will achieve three of our key objectives: it will improve a site that is a bit of an eyesore, it will create a local facility and will provide a place where people can learn about the local environment and its history.”

Initial work includes clearing unwanted trees and vegetation and groundworks. Once the groundwork is complete, the society members will go ahead and create Sparrow Park in their free time.

The finished park will include a terrace, footpath, wall bearing the name Liversedge, bench, screening fence and an information board about the village and its history.

It is hoped the park will be complete by October 2011.
