Murder investigation launched as man dies in South Yorkshire shooting

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died in a fatal shooting in Mexborough, South Yorkshire.

The 20-year-old was shot in Wath Road, just after 4pm yesterday.

Emergency services were called but the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a formal identification has not yet taken place, but the man's family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Detectives remain in the area today, trawling CCTV footage and carrying out house to house enquiries.

Superintendent Neil Thomas said: “There will be a large number of officers in the area in the coming days as we continue to investigate this horrendous incident, in which a young man has tragically died.

“We now need the help of the community to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has any information which may help, to talk to us.”
