A police officer who hit and injured a man with his van is to face a misconduct hearing.

PC Stuart Hodson, of West Yorkshire Police, was driving the marked police van in Castleford when he was alerted to a BMW driving at speed.

PC Hodson activated his blue lights and the car initially stopped, however as the officer began to pull the police van in front of the BMW, it made off.

Other officers in the police van broadcast a radio message stating the BMW had failed to stop.

The BMW subsequently crashed into a roundabout. The male driver got out and began to run away. Upon seeing this, PC Hodson drove his van closer in order to get nearer the man and detain him on foot.

The front offside of the police van collided with the male, injuring him in the process.

The incident happened on June 15, 2019.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "It is alleged that PC Hodson conducted an unauthorised pursuit of the vehicle, knowing that the vehicle he was driving was not a pursuit vehicle; used force to detain the male driver that was not necessary and proportionate in all the circumstances; and failed to act diligently in the exercise of his duties and responsibilities."

The misconduct hearing will take place on Monday, January 18, and is expected to last three days.
