Watch: ‘Blind’ driver smashes into cyclist after forgetting his glasses

A "blind" driver was caught on camera smashing into a cyclist after "forgetting" to wear his glasses.

CCTV captured Uchenna Agunenye, 48, behind the wheel of his silver Citroën C4 before he swerved off the road and into a cyclist on a cycle lane.

The woman was thrown off her bike before crashing into nearby metal railings during the incident which happened along Holderness Road, in Hull, on July 22 last year.

Officers patrolling the area - along with members of the public - can be seen running over to the woman after the horror crash to assist whilst emergency services arrived.

The victim was subsequently conveyed to hospital for treatment, including a broken leg, heel and several toes, a court was told.

She also suffered lacerations and a fracture to her elbow and was left requiring surgery.

Agunenye was breathalysed and provided a drug wipe at the scene and both were negative however, a roadside eyesight test was conducted and Agunenye failed.

Further lines of enquiry were conducted at the scene and it was identified that the conditions of his driving license were in fact to ensure he wore glasses and he was arrested.

Agunenye was interviewed by officers from our roads policing team in connection with the incident.

It was there he admitted to forgetting to wear his glasses and that this is what caused him to collide with the cyclist, a crown court heard.

Agunenye, of Jalland Street, Hull, has since been sentenced for causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a collision.

Appearing at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday, September 15, the reckless driver was sentenced to 14 months suspended for 12.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years, disqualified until he has passed an extended test, ordered to conduct 180 hours of unpaid work and pay the cyclist £187.

PS Matt Tuton from our Roads Policing Unit said: “The actions of Agunenye that day were careless and reckless and whilst the cyclist is lucky to be alive, the physical and psychological impact this collision will continue to have on her for the rest of her life are unimaginable.

“If your eyesight has deteriorated, it is important to get your eyes checked.

"Being able to see is fundamental to safe driving.

"Any time you behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are responsible to ensure that you are fit to drive for not only the safety of yourself and any passengers but also to members of the public.

“Our message is simple; drive safe, every time.”

He also encouraged members of the public to "report dangerous or reckless driving".
