Dead Northern: Jaws on Ouse as boat hosts classic film

Fans of Steven Spielberg's first blockbuster Jaws can get to watch it from a boat – on a river in York.

York-based horror film festival Dead Northern is hosting the floating cinema event with City Cruises York on Saturday April 25.

More than 50 years on from its first showing, the film is still celebrated as a masterpiece of suspense due to Spielberg’s innovative directing — born from a malfunctioning mechanical shark — which forced a focus on psychological tension over gore, amplified by John Williams' ominous score.

A spokesperson for Dead Northern said: “We’re always looking for ways to reimagine classic films and this felt like the perfect opportunity.

"With Jaws, the setting does half the work for you, so we teamed up with City Cruises and, thankfully, found our ‘bigger boat’ in The River Prince.

"It’s going to be a brilliant, slightly nerve-wracking night on the Ouse.”

Boarding begins at King's Staith Landing at 6.45pm with a prompt departure at 7pm, returning at around 10pm. Tickets are priced at £26. As the film is rated 12A, under-12s must be accompanied by an adult.
