Grim nights when it rained bombs

ACTIVITIES including workshops and exhibitions will be held in Sheffield next month to mark the 70th anniversary of the Blitz.

On the nights of December 12 and 15, 1940, Sheffield faced nine hours of continuous bombing, above, by the Luftwaffe. In total 47,000 incendiary bombs were dropped, 785 people were killed or reported missing and more than half of the city's houses were damaged. Events next month will include the "Operation Crucible" exhibition, running at the Central Library throughout December. Coun Shaffaq Mohammed from Sheffield Council said: "These were frightening times. This programme is an opportunity for us to find out what happened to our city and its people during those terrible days. And for some Sheffielders who lived through it, it's a chance to remember and reflect."
