Hospital reopens after staff sickness

AN East Coast hospital will reopen to patients this week after being closed for more than a month because of staff sickness.

The 12-bed ward at Hornsea Cottage Hospital closed on Friday July 29, leaving patients having to be transferred to other hospitals by ambulance.

The ward at the hospital, on Eastgate, in the town, will reopen today and admit patients from Wednesday.

Humber NHS Foundation Trust apologised for the closure. The trust’s director of nursing and service delivery Angie Mason said: “Patient safety is always our priority.

“We now feel it is clinically safe to reopen the inpatient ward.

“We apologise to our patients and their families for any inconvenience the closure has caused.”

The ward will close permanently next year when a new £19m community hospital opens in Beverley.

The hospital, due to open in the spring, will replace the 36 beds at Hornsea Cottage Hospital, Alfred Bean Hospital, in Driffield, and Beverley Westwood, the latter of which will close.

Hornsea will remain a base for nursing and therapy services.
