Missioner receives merchant medal

The Port Missioner to Hull was recognised yesterday for his work assisting serving and retired fishermen.

Senior Superintendent Geoff Chandler, of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal from Admiral Lord West of Spithead, in the company of Shipping Minister Mike Penning MP.

Mr Chandler, from Thorngumbald, is one of 18 seafarers and shipping industry personnel who have been awarded the medal this year.

Mr Chandler has been the Mission's honorary agent in the city since 2006 and has held similar roles across the country for many years.

He now manages the cases of more than 400 beneficiaries and has been the mission's representative in fishing communities across the UK for 40 years.

His work for the mission in Hull is mainly centred around supporting relatives of lost and disabled fishermen when they are in hardship.

As a lay preacher he also leads the service at the funerals of ex-trawlermen. Mr Chandler is assisted in his work for the mission by a local advisory committee drawn from the city's fishing community.
