George Austin, former Archdeacon of York

George Austin, who has died at 87, was Archdeacon of York from 1988 to 1999.

Born in 1931 in Bury, Lancashire, he was ordained in 1955 and served curacies in Chorley, Notting Hill and Dunstable before becoming vicar of nearby Eaton Bray at St Albans in 1964.

He went on to be vicar of Bushey Heath in 1970 and while there was made a Canon of St Albans.

He succeeded Leslie Stanbridge as Archdeacon of York in 1988 and became a Canon and Prebendary of York.

On his retirement in 1999, he was given the title Archdeacon Emeritus by the then Archbishop of York, David Hope, and with his wife Bobbie, became a member of St Luke’s Church in York.

He continued to minister until moving south as Bobbie’s health began to fail in 2009.

She died in 2016 and he is survived by their son, Jeremy.
