Calls for ‘rage’ over Henry Nowak’s death are to be condemned

Violent clashes between protesters and police in Southampton are to be roundly condemned. Any politician that is patriotic about this country would call for an end to violence.

The anger that people feel over Henry Nowak’s death is completely warranted. Failings in policing need to be addressed. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) announced it would review anti-racism guidance, which some blame for the actions of the officers who arrested Mr Nowak.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is right to raise concerns over “pernicious identity politics” leading to the country “going backwards”. However, it is worth remembering why guidance such as this has had to be introduced in the first place.

That is not to say that the question as to whether the police are being hampered in their work is an unintended consequence.

However, to call for “pure cold rage”, as leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage did, in response to the murder of Mr Nowak is just incitement from a man who could one day be the Prime Minister of this great nation.

Anyone in a turban will now be looking over their shoulder. That is not how the peaceful Sikh community should have to live. Indeed no one should have to fear for their safety.

It is important for people to be vigilant of provocateurs who clearly want to seed discord in our communities. With the 10th anniversary of Jo Cox’s death approach, it is a salient time to remind ourselves of her immortal words that “we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us”.
