Let's create a lasting tribute to Baroness Betty Boothroyd in Dewsbury - The Yorkshire Post says

The funeral of Yorkshire’s own Baroness Betty Boothroyd was rightly populated with those sitting at the very top of British politics such as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer and Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, after her death last month at the age of 93.

The Yorkshire Post looks forward to working alongside civic and business leaders to create a memorial to this stalwart of national politics in her home town of Dewsbury.

It would be a poignant and permanent tribute to someone who came from humble beginnings but smashed the glass ceiling in politics by becoming the first, and still the only, female Speaker of the House of Commons.

Dewsbury is not immune to the challenges of poverty affecting the region. How wonderful it would be to have a place where families could take little girls, in particular, to see that anything is possible.
