Coming from the much respected South Bank Sky Arts Awards, it is also recognition for the quality and creativity of performers, and production crews, that have seen Leeds, and the rest of Yorkshire, emerge as a national powerhouse for the arts.
But the bigger prize will be the return of live performances, in front of a paying audience, next year once Covid restrictions permit. Yesterday Cultural Secretary Oliver Dowden indicated to MPs that “a full return” of fans to sports stadiums is hoped for by autumn 2021, and in time for rugby league’s World Cup.
Let’s hope he doesn’t take his eye off the ball, like Mr Berry, and forget theatres – or the rest of the performing arts too.
