A fitting tribute to both the Queen – and recognition of the public’s appreciation of environmental matters – the new Royal DIY guide to the safe, and successful, planting of trees is awaited with interest.

As everyone is encouraged to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’, it is a precious reminder, as Boris Johnson says while the finishing touches are made to Downing Street’s Christmas tree that originates from Yorkshire, that new spruces have the potential to transform communities, connect us with nature and provide homes for precious wildlife.

Perhaps Sheffield should be the first focus of the new initiative after the furore over the felling of healthy trees in a council scandal that still shames the city – it will take decades for new trees to reach the maturity of all those that were lost.
