YOUR coverage (The Yorkshire Post, October 24) of the death of comedy writer Jimmy Perry, at the age of 93, together with the picture of his co-writer David Croft at the British Comedy Awards in 2003, represented yet another reminder of the golden age of comedy writing that alas all but disappeared.

Having listened intently to my father’s tales of his two years with the local volunteer force (the Home Guard) before he was called up for service with the RAF, I became a Dad’s Army regular viewer from the first showings in 1968.

Even now all these years later, and with each of the 80 episodes being shown over and over, my Saturday evenings would not be complete without my dose of Captain Mainwaring and the platoon in some comic scene.

Like many of the Walmington and Eastgate platoons in the early series, Dad went on evening fire watch armed with a broom handle and a torch. Thank you Jimmy and David in bringing it all back to life.
