Britain has well and truly lost its way, everything is much grimmer than it used to be - Yorkshire Post Letters

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Holgate, York.

The awful riots and destruction now taking place in France, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Albania could soon happen in the UK. GB does not stand for ‘getting better’. Things for many of us are much worse than many years ago. Our once Great Britain is in steep decline.

All the following are far worse now: cost of living, fuel prices, trust, truth, waiting lists, getting an appointment with your local GP, unemployment, crime, drug use, vaping, obesity, care of the elderly, rail reliability, lost bus routes, illegal immigration, lies and deceit from politicians, chance of WWIII, disease, litter, graffiti, unsocial behaviour, 18 to 24 year olds not in work, education nor training, cost of welfare hand outs, A1 tricks, closing of public services and facilities, climate change, vast amount of pollution, filthy water ways, rivers, streams and the seas.

Roads with pot holes, lack of common sense and logic, recycling, bin collection, grossly over paid civil servants, firms who simply do not care about their customers, hard to talk on the phone to anyone, cheats in sport, poor school infrastructure and lack of good teachers, animal cruelty, driving standards, the gap between rich and poor ever widening, fraud, too few prisons, lack of justice for victims, the ‘woke’ brigade, lack of patriotism, the RNLI being abused, ever more violent TV and social media.

More and more imported food, lack of true green spaces, wild life going extinct, gun crime, youngsters involved in violent crimes, too many hours on smart 'phones, the ‘American’ influence, NHS ‘corridor care’, racism, domestic abuse, lack of the arts in schools, lack of apprenticeships, inappropriate university courses, lack of plumbers, brickies, carpenters, electricians, joiners, a skilled work force, lack of probation officers, lack of judges and law courts, terrible condition of social housing, evil land lords, over spending Councils, corruption almost everywhere and so much more.

Politicians talk the talk, know the problems, but none say how they will/can overcome them.

People like me, born in the 1940s, were definitely there at the best times. Life in the 1960s was a joy, now it is just grim for so many.
