WE’VE all seen evidence with our own eyes of a tidal wave of selfish misbehaviour and littering at inland beauty spots, and along our coasts, as the lockdown has been eased. If anything, it has been overshadowing the supermarket hoarding that we saw when restrictions were first introduced back in March.

It’s never easy to prevent idiots littering, but there is something that can be done now about disposable barbecues, and that is to ban them completely by law outside people’s back gardens. It’s barely June, but we have already seen the devastating effects of these lethal objects as they are abandoned to burn themselves out around the country by people who, quite simply, don’t care.

This has been a problem for years and it’s time it was stopped.

I understand that two e-petitions seeking to ban them failed through technicalities in 2019.

This suggests that the only realistic option is to write directly to our MPs, bury them under an avalanche of letters, and get the subject of barbecues tabled to ministers before the dry season gets any older.

To those who use these things I say this: for the selfish instant gratification of a burger, you could destroy a fragile habitat which will take decades to recover.
