Why I'm backing calls for Rossington to have a fully functioning police station again - Yorkshire Post Letters
From: Mr MJ Thompson, Goodison Blvd, Cantley, Doncaster.
Concerning the recent article on the regional news page about huge public support to create a police station at Rossington south of Doncaster.
About four years ago I was walking my dog beside the east coast main line railway line. When I came to the usual foot crossing over the railway tracks I came across a young man sat on the embankment right next to the track.
His demeanour did not seem quite right so to make small talk I asked him if he was waiting to capture the sight of a steam train which often passes through here.

He said no and he had been there for three hours and had not seen any steam trains. I thought this was a bit odd so knowing that there was a police station in Rossington and I had no mobile phone on me I called at the police station on my way home.
On arriving at the station it was not now a normal police station. There was no access to go inside and on reading a notice on the locked door it stated that although it was manned it was not open to the public as it was some type of regional communication hub.
So I then had to return home and phone 999 to report my concern about the young man hoping that because of the delay of no contact at the police station action could be taken belatedly to approach the young man.
Later that night on the six o'clock news it was reported that all trains had been stopped on the line concerning a trespass incident near Doncaster. I only hoped that the young man was reached in time.
In conclusion I find it rather distressing that police officers were in a building just five minutes away from the incident but unable to react to the situation. So the public petition to reopen Rossington as a fully functional police station has my full support.
