Why MPs should be selected from a range of different occupations - Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Paul Brown, Bents Green Road, Sheffield.

The voting process has come under some criticism for not attracting sufficient numbers at election time. The primary reason for this is that too many of us see no difference between parties whatever they may say about their policies.

One way to address this would be to have a rule that MPs should be selected from a range of different occupations. At present the majority of walks of life in the country have no representative in parliament.

If there was a rule that each major party should have members from Civil Service, NHS, building trade, general manufacturing, engineering and general service occupations such as the motor trade or electrical specialists. Perhaps their representatives could be older people who have had a life in these different professions and are able to bring their diverse experience to parliament.

Then perhaps we would have legislation passed which takes account the needs of the majority of the population rather than little cliques of professional politicians.
