Park-and-ride plan gets green light

A CONTROVERSIAL plan for a park and ride scheme on the outskirts of Whitby has been approved by the North York Moors National Park planning committee.

Planners gave the green light to the building of a 450-space car park on the outskirts of the resort, after earlier backing the idea in principle.

However, the multi-million pound scheme put forward by North Yorkshire County Council for land at the junction of Guisborough Road, the A171 road and Barkers Lane, Whitby, met with opposition when it went before the North York Moors National Park Authority’s planning committee yesterday. While many were in favour of the plan, arguing that it would ease traffic congestion in the tourist town, some locals were against the scheme. They argued it would urbanise the area and cause light pollution in a prominent part of the National Park.

The scheme has been on the drawing board for several years.
