These are the Yorkshire beauty spots you can and can't visit this weekend

With lockdown rules on household groups travelling for exercise being relaxed, many families will be preparing to head to the countryside or coast this weekend.

Yet Yorkshire's two National Parks and several of its seaside towns have sent out a strong message that they are not yet ready to receive visitors and are not open for business.

Concerns around the feasibility of social distancing and the transmission of the infection from urban to rural areas have influenced the attitudes of residents of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey, as well as the National Parks' management and other landowning bodies such as Forestry England, the National Trust and Yorkshire Water.

Here's a guide to the tourist hotspots you can and shouldn't visit if you live far enough away to have to drive there.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

As a government-funded agency, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has had to re-open car parks and some public toilets. However, visitor centres are likely to remain closed and the authority is not actively welcoming visitors, stating that they would have preferred a staggered re-opening to take into account the health concerns of the local population.

Although they expect visitors to turn up this weekend, they've been warned that businesses are still closed, social distancing still applies and that you should only exercise within your abilities - extreme sports and activities are discouraged. Gathering in groups remains forbidden, as does camping, overnight stays in motorhomes and visits to second homes.

North York Moors National Park

In the North York Moors, access is 'limited' and the National Park Authority has warned that they are not expecting to fully re-open until July at the earliest. They have reminded visitors of social distancing responsibilities and that camping, motorhome travel and overnight stays in second homes are still forbidden.

The car parks at Newton under Roseberry, Sutton Bank and Saltergate are now open. The toilets at Sutton Bank will also be re-opening shortly. These measures will remain under constant review.

Ilkley

Bradford Council has re-opened its car parks at several popular tourist spots, including those in Ilkley which are used by visitors to Ilkley Moor and the River Wharfe.

Car parks in Keighley, Baildon, Penistone Hill, Esholt, Shipley, Oakenshaw, Hirst Wood and Harden Moor are also accessible.

Forestry England

Forestry England, which manages Dalby Forest in Ryedale, is also a government agency but they are taking a cautious approach and the re-opening of car parks and visitor facilities will be phased. Currently, the Dalby Forest car park remains shut.

Scarborough, Whitby and Filey

North Yorkshire County Council has authorised the closure of seafront roads in Scarborough to prevent vehicle access this weekend. Car parks and public toilets remain shut and there is no lifeguard cover on beaches.

The mayors of all three towns have called for tourists to stay away, pointing out that social distancing is difficult on narrow streets and that parking is limited. Businesses remain closed.

Bridlington and Hornsea

The message is the same on the East Yorkshire coast - Bridlington's mayor Liam Dealtry has stated that the town is 'closed' to visitors and that facilities such as toilets will not re-open. Beach chalets are still out of bounds.

Knaresborough, Ripon and Pateley Bridge

Car parks and public toilets are closed. Attractions in the town remain shut.

National Trust

All National Trust sites and coastal car parks remain closed. As a charity, the National Trust can manage their own re-opening, and they have chosen to stagger access to their sites in line with social distancing guidelines. Outdoor sites are likely to open before historic houses.

RSPB

The RSPB will not be re-opening their nature reserves until wildlife has had time to adapt to the re-introduction of visitors. Their sites include Bempton Cliffs, near Bridlington, and Fairburn Ings, near Castleford.

Yorkshire Water

Car parks at Yorkshire Water-managed reservoirs will also remain shut until further notice. Access to pathways for pedestrians and cyclists is still permitted. Yorkshire Water maintain car parks at 24 reservoirs, including Ogden Water near Halifax, Scammonden Reservoir near Huddersfield, and Fewston and Swinsty near Harrogate.
