Yorkshire coast town Whitby famous for links with Captain Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula named among areas with the most holiday lets per person according to finance experts

The coastal town in Yorkshire Whitby has been named one of the areas with the most holiday lets per person according to finance experts at This Is Money.

There’s no doubt that the majority of Yorkshire tourism comes from the jewel coastline as millions of people flock to coastal towns and villages for holidays.

While this is generally considered good, according to Daily Mail’s finance website This Is Money, Britain’s coastline is seeing a sharp increase of holiday lets on the website Airbnb. This in turn is forcing young families to move away from the coast and schools and shops are being forced to close which is risking the survival of these places.

An investigation conducted by Mail on Sunday has found 24 seaside communities that are currently Airbnb hotspots in Britain including Whitby.

Many areas have decided to resist this rapid development.

Whitby residents voted in the polls in 2022 to restrict the sales of second homes, according to the money website, collating to more than 90 per cent of residents voting to bring in limitations.

Regardless of these new rules, Whitby has a population of 13,129 and yet there are still 744 Airbnbs in the town.
