Photographer wins art competition

ARTIST Brian Adams from Sheffield has been named the winner of the annual South Yorkshire Open Art competition and pocketed £500 in prize money.

Judges said his photograph, Palais de la Bahia, Marrakech, showed "a wonderful awareness of space and how to fill it."

Mr Adams, said: "After 40 years in professional employment, retirement has given me the freedom to develop my photography.

"I am delighted to win this award, bringing as it does the acknowledgement of my lifelong interest – this year being the 50th anniversary of my taking up photography."

Meanwhile, the winner of the South Yorkshire Open Art Emerging Artist of the Year is Roanna Watts.

The exhibition runs until Friday, May 7 at the Cooper Gallery in Church Street, Barnsley. Visitors to the gallery can also vote for their favourite piece, which will win the new Visitor's Choice award.
