Scott doffs hat to doctorate

JOURNALIST Selina Scott has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Hull. One of the first anchorwomen in news in the UK, Scarborough-born Ms Scott was also in at the launch of breakfast television for the BBC.

Ms Scott, who has a small farm in North Yorkshire, said: “It is a delight to be given a Doctor of Letters from the University where Philip Larkin worked as a librarian and wrote poetry that redefined the poetry of the 20th century. And as a Yorkshire woman born and bred, to have this honour borne on me by the county’s finest university is especially great.”

Her message to youngsters was: “If you have talents and you are willing to adapt, to start afresh in places you never knew existed, to not do the same thing that everyone else is doing because it’s fashionable, then you will have the chance to create a career that suits you.” picture: terry carrott.
