But if you’ve left your shopping until the final moment, there’s no need to panic, says Meadowhall gift expert Alex Caley.

“We are now in full-swing Christmas mode here at Meadowhall,” she said. “It’s getting busier by the day and we’ve just extended our opening hours, from 9am to 11pm, giving everyone more time to shop for those all-important Christmas gifts.

“But if you’re like me and haven’t started shopping yet, there’s no need to panic. There’s still some fantastic deals to be had.”

If you are stuck for ideas, look no further. Alex has done all the hard work and picked five top gift ideas for mum and dad, a teenage boy and girl, the grandparents and ‘the awkward one’ that you never know what to buy for.

And if these don’t fit the bill, she’s got some advice on the best trends this Christmas.

“Anything Star Wars related is set to be huge,” she said. “I’m pretty sure everything has been thought of, from branded clothing in Primark to cookie cutters in Lakeland and your own Darth Vader Build-A-Bear, to traditional favourites like Lego and posters.

“Music is always big on the gift list, and the new Adele album in breaking records. The vinyl revival is gaining pace too, as more and more musicians choose to put their work on record. In 2014, UK vinyl sales topped more than one million for the first time since 1996, and this year looks to be even bigger with both vintage and contemporary vinyls selling well. You can find a range of vinyl in store in HMV and also in Urban Outfitters.”

In fashion, Alex says Next, Joules and Jack Wills have everything from smaller stocking fillers like fluffy socks and mobile phone covers, or bigger buys like winter coats.

“Next is great not only for gifts, but also for the all-important Christmas preparations,” she said. “Now it’s not just about gifts, but making sure your house is dressed too, it needs to look perfect and inviting for the big day. Next have a fantastic selection of ornate baubles for the tree, wreaths for the front door and beautiful table decorations to really set off your Christmas meal.”
