Teenager freed after car boot prank

FIRE crews have had to rescue a teenager who was locked inside a car boot for 45 minutes on a hot summers’ day – after a lunchtime works prank went awry.

The firefighters’ rescue team had to smash their way into the boot of the Lexus to release the 18-year-old by breaking the rear light so that they could get at the locking mechanism.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The young man was quite hot by the time he was freed.

“We believe he was in the boot for about 45 minutes and was getting worried.

“The boot could not be opened from the inside.

“When he got out we gave him some oxygen but he did not require hospital treatment,” the spokesman added.

The incident occurred in the car park of the Eurocare Showers factory on an industrial estate at Wheatley, Doncaster.

It is understood that managers there are now considering disciplinary action against the culprits.

Eurocare, a family-run company, recently moved to the site.

The business specialises in the manufacture of shower units and accessible bathing equipment for disabled and older people.

A spokesman said: “A man was accidentally locked inside a car boot during a company lunch break.

“It is understood that the young man who has been with the company for three months voluntarily stepped into the boot of a co-worker to demonstrate its large size.

“Another worker closed the boot as a prank but it could not be re-opened. Such pranks are not tolerated by the company.”

The freed teenager, who has not been named, was given oxygen by the firefighters who asked if he wanted to go to hospital for a check-up.

He declined and returned to work that afternoon.
