The Estrella Dam Top 50 Gastropubs Awards judges have included three Yorkshire businesses in their 2019 guide.

A new entry to the annual chart at number 50 is The Angel at Hetton, near Skipton, which is described as a 'characterful country inn'. Its former owner Dennis Watkins - nicknamed the 'godfather of the gastropub' - transformed it from a drinkers' den into a fine dining spot.

The other two Yorkshire inclusions are both in the national top 10 - cementing the county's reputation as a gastronomic capital.

The Pipe and Glass in South Dalton, near Beverley, is at number nine, and is praised for its 'lack of pretension', good value and friendliness.

Michelin-starred chef Andrew Pern's The Star Inn at Harome was in fourth, and was even called 'the perfect country pub' by judges who admired the thatched roof and the welcome. However, The Star has fallen from its place at the top of the charts in 2018.
