M1 closed: Motorway closed due to crash after loose cows roam carriageway for second day in a row

The M1 has been closed in South Yorkshire after cows made it onto the carriageway of a Yorkshire motorway for the second day in a row.

National Highways said there has been a ‘single vehicle crash’ following the animals making their way onto the southbound carriageway.

It is the second day in a row that cows have led to a motorway in Yorkshire being closed, after the M62 was closed overnight after the animals made their way onto the carriageway.

Traffic is currently being diverted off the M1 southbound at junction 34 for Tinsley, and a full closure is in place.

National Highways tweeted: “ M1 Southbound #J34 #Tinsley Full closure in place. #TrafficOfficers are currently dealing with a single vehicle accident including 2 loose cows in the carriage way. All Traffic will be diverted off and can re join via the entry slip.

At around 10am it added: “Closed both directions - we are hoping to reopen the northbound carriageway shortly, the southbound closure will need to remain in place whilst recovery takes place. We will update as the incident progresses.”
