Video: Fly through Leeds’ £600m Eastgate Quarters development

PLANS for a new civic square and a large scale shopping development scheme in Leeds have been submitted to planning officials.

The planned £600m scheme will transform the 6.9 hectare brownfield site in the Eastgate area of the city, most of which has been empty for the past four decades, creating some 4,000 new jobs in the process.

Hammerson, the company behind the scheme, has submitted an outline planning application to Leeds City Council for the retail-led, mixed used regeneration scheme.

The plans include a two level shopping arcade, a new civic square, the restoration of historic buildings, the largest shopper car park in the city – which will have around 2,500 spaces – and refurbished offices.

Officials say that Eastgate Quarters will have in the region of 130 new stores, and will create space for top-end high street retail companies.

The scheme will be anchored by flagship stores for John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.

Andrew Hilston, project director for Hammerson, said: “We have had strong feedback on the revised proposal and the time taken to review the original principles has resulted in a best in class masterplan scheme.

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member responsible for development, said: “The submission of the Eastgate Quarters application demonstrates confidence in Leeds, consolidating the city’s position as one of the most exciting and desirable city centre destinations in the country.

And Jeremy Collins, the property director for John Lewis added: “Leeds remains an important strategic location in our department store expansion programme.”
