Yellow fog warning in place across parts of England and Wales amid flight delays
A yellow fog warning is in place across parts of England and Wales, with the Met Office warning dense fog could lead to travel delays on Remembrance Sunday.
The warning is in place until 10am, with the Met Office predicting visibility will fall to less than 50m in some places.
The warning covers London and south-east England, east and west Midlands, Norfolk and Hertfordshire in the east of England, parts of Yorkshire and Humber as well as parts of north-west and south-west England.
In Wales, the alert covers areas around Flintshire and Wrexham.
“Fog will slowly lift and clear during Sunday morning; likely slowest across parts of the West Country and central southern England,” the alert read.
People are advised to allow extra time for travel, check road conditions ahead of time and ensure fog lights are working.
“Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel, may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice,” the alert read.
The weather warning came amid predictions Britons could be hit by colder temperatures later this month as a weakening polar vortex threatens to bring Arctic air.
The polar vortex is a ring of powerful winds that helps keep freezing air near the North Pole.
If it weakens, it could allow colder Arctic air to sweep south towards Britain, increasing the risk of wintry weather.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “At the moment, we’ve got a warming taking place in the stratosphere.
“The polar vortex in the stratosphere is starting to weaken.”
The Met Office will monitor the polar vortex over the next few weeks to see whether the disruption could bring colder conditions to Britain.
