How Dinnington bar worker Grace Hall became a national boxing champion

While 25-year-old Grace Hall from Dinnington may find most of her life is spent working in her local sports bar, her downtime is spent training in Riley’s Boxing Gym and after just 18 months in the sport she has won a gold medal at a national level.

Hall, with support from coach Steve Dakin, won the female seniors’ U57kg title at the Women's National Development Championships in Kettering.

“I knew it was going to be tough, I had come into the competition with only two previous fights whereas everyone else had loads more than me,” said Hall, who juggles long working days with six days a week of training.

“By the finals I knew I really wanted to win but I didn't want to let on to others how much I wanted it.

“When they announced my name it was just like a wave of relief that all my hard work had paid off.

“It was great to have Steve there with me. Before every bout in the competition he just helped me feel much calmer. He also brought about my new good luck charm – to eat a jam sandwich before fighting in the ring.”

Hall spoke passionately about how boxing helped give her a direction in life.

“I played football until I was about 16 but I wanted a sport with a bit more drive. It gave my life more discipline and gave me aspirations with something to work towards, which had improved my motivation in many ways,” she said.

Riley’s Boxing Gym, which is owned by ex Sheffield professional Robert Riley, was the starting place for both Dakin’s coaching career and Hall’s introduction to the sport.

Hall said: “I have gained so much trust in Steve over this past year, and not just because of what we have achieved but because he’s supported me through everything, he's really seen me at my worst and at my best through every part of this sport.”

Dakin added: “She's a determined athlete inside and out. If there was ever champion material in anyone, it’s Grace Hall.”

On her future, Hall added: “The long term goal will always be to become professional but right now, I'm just happy to see what new opportunities come along for me and Steve.”
