Struggling Brighouse frustrated by batting collapse and weather

Championship B is definitely divided into two on a 50-50 basis.

The top half is headed by Townville who have yet to lose a game this season with 214 points.

In sixth place are Bankfoot CC with five wins and 115 points, while Bowling Old Lane head up the challenges to the top half with four wins and 105 points.

Hartshead Moor, without a single win and just eight batting points, are now struggling on 46 points.

Just above are Brighouse with two wins and 76 points.

Hopton Mills are third-bottom after three wins and equal batting and bowling points, just 10 points ahead of Brighouse.

On Saturday, Brighouse were at home to fourth-bottom Spen Victoria, in a clash where a win could have seen the home club move above Hopton – helping to reflect the growing confidence within the side,.

Alternatively, defeat would allow their opponents to widen the gap and create a mid-table ‘mini_-eague’ away from the bottom three.

Brighouse won the toss and elected to bat in a game reduced to 30 overs. Jay Mistry opened with hard-driving Zafar Jadoon. and they put on 57 for the first wicket.

The home side’s ability to implode again kicked in with three wickets lost for just five runs and they were 97-5 as they looked for 150 runs and three batting points. They finished short on 142-9.

Zafar bowled opener Peter Jackson (10) but Spen’s intentions were clear as they set off in chase of their target before the weather closed in again.

They could only muster 61 in 11 overs before the umpires called a halt on the grounds of player safety. Both captains took issue, but they would not relent.

Brighouse 2nds were away to Keighley and skipper Neil Goldsborough elected to bat after winning the toss.

The skipper was adjudged leg before for just seven before fellow opener Srinidhi Kumar set about the bowling alongside Majid Khan, the pair putting on 152 before Kumar was sent on his way for 91.

Khan finished unbeaten on 77 after being joined by Sajid Khan (34no) to leave their side on 223-2 off 42 overs.

With Keighley on 37-2 the prospects for a victory looked good, but they had to settle for eight points as the weather intervened.
