Wrenthorpe ensure repeat title success

WRENTHORPE made certain of retaining the Premier Division title by crushing Wakefield St Michael’s whose six-wicket defeat confirmed their relegation.

Greig Batty (5-5), Joe Ellis (2-18) and Tom Glover (2-23) routed St Michael’s for 49, the top-flight’s lowest total this year.

With one match remaining, Wrenthorpe have an unassailable seven-point lead over closest rivals Methley who beat Northowram Fields. Chris Holliday (122) and Nick Connolly (117no) put on 187 as Methley posted 296-2 and Hemantha Alles (4-53) and Simon Purdy (3-66) toppled Northowram for 200 in reply.

Joe Suggitt (105) and David Cummings (70) shared a 177-run stand as New Farnley piled up 326-6 against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers who managed only 154 in reply.

James Glynn (3-3), Naveed Sayeed (3-27) and Jack Hughes (2-28) sent Birstall collapsing from 67-1 to 123 all out, replying to Townville’s 236 that included 84 by Jonathan Booth.

Birstall’s defeat was hard on Saifur Rehman (6-43) and Connor Williams (67).

Hunslet Nelson’s Masaud Mohmend (5-35) and Sohail Raz (4-37) skittled relegated Ossett for 97.

Tommy Roy finished unbeaten on 59 as Hunslet knocked off the runs in just 11.1 overs.

Half-centuries by Jordan Sleightholme, Alan Burton and Akram Asif were in vain for Altofts who lost a high-scoring game at Wakefield Thornes by 31 runs.

Phil Callaghan (62), Richard Foster (52) and Matthew Varley (50) led Thornes’ scoring.

Batley, relegated last season, are making a swift return to the Premier Division after clinching promotion by trouncing relegated Ossett. Mohammed Tahir (4-8) bowled out Ossett for 92 after Roheil Hussain (82), Tahir (58), Tauseeq Raza (54) and Ayaz Seedat (45no) had guided Batley to 310-5. Carlton are favourites for the second promotion spot. They are four points clear of third-placed Moorlands.

East Leeds beat Buttershaw St Paul’s by one run. Chasing East Leeds’ 222-9, Buttershaw were all out for 221 with three balls remaining.
