Barnsley FC boss Daniel Stendel on Reds' 'good step' in 'chaotic' Carabao Cup roller-coaster at Peterborough United

DANIEL Stendel professed to mixed feelings after his Barnsley side fully played their part in a cracking Carabao Cup tie at League One rivals Peterborough United which ended deadlocked at 3-3 - with Posh prevailing on penalties to progress into round four.

After a madcap first half finished 2-2, Reyes Cleary’s second goal of the night looked to have won it for Barnsley. but Danny Ormerod’s 88th-minute header meant the tie at the Weston Homes Stadium went the distance.

Home keeper Alex Bass made the crucial spot-kick save from teenager Luke Alker.

After heavy League One defeats against Plymouth Argyle and Stevenage, Stendel was happy with his young side's response in the Fens.

But the leakage of three more goals took the Reds' tally of concessions to 11 in their past three matches, although Stendel preferred to focus on the positives.

He said: "We can score with the chances in the second half, more goals than one.

"You can see in the end, we press Peterborough in their own half, winning every second ball. But after 3-2 in the last ten minutes, we are a little bit passive and missed some attacking situations.

"It was one moment we weren’t ready and conceded a goal. (But) I told the players I am really happy with our reaction to the last two games and it’s hard because we could have gone home with a victory.

"Peterborough never gave up then what happened in the penalty shoot-out can happen.

"We won against Wigan (in the first round), lost tonight, but I’m not unhappy with our performance.

"We wanted to react from the last two results in the league, which is what happened.

"This was a good step, we would have preferred to have gone home with a win, but maybe on Saturday (against Leicester).”

The tie was settled by Harrison Jones’ winning spot-kick.

Posh chief Luke Williams said: "It was a roller-coaster – I feel like I’ve aged about 10 years, but at the end of it we’ve come out victorious, so I feel a bit better now.

"It was just chaotic, it was like a game from the mid-80s because there was just nobody in the middle of the pitch.

"You could have put a (basketball) hoop at each end and I think it wouldn’t have made any difference. It was just madness, but hopefully the fans went home happy.”
