Made two fine first-half saves to deny prolific Cambridge United marksman Paul Mullin and kept an impressive clean sheet at the League Two leaders.

Defence

Callum Brittain (Barnsley)

Continued his exemplary campaign in the colours of Barnsley with an excellent Cup performance against Norwich.

Another high-energy shift and posted danger with his deliveries from the flanks

Marc Bola (Middlesbrough)

On a difficult afternoon for Boro, Bola was solid and resolute in his defensive duties. One of the club’s most improved players this term.

Osaze Urhoghide (Sheffield Wednesday)

Shone in his comeback game, albeit in a losing Cup cause at Everton and performed admirably against the Blues’ £50m man Richarlison - in his first senior outing in almost a year.

Ed Francis (Harrogate Town)

Operating in a left-back role, Francis impressed as Harrogate dug out a fine point at Salford City.

Helped himself to a dramatic late equaliser in the bargain.

Midfield

Callum Styles (Barnsley)

Reinforced his credentials, not that was needed, as one of the Championship’s top young talents of 2020-21.

Made a match-winning contribution at both ends - scoring the decisive goal to enable Barnsley to get past Norwich and producing a key goalline block. Immense.

Richie Smallwood (Hull City)

Performed his bits-and-pieces role to perfection as Hull City made a statement with a brilliant League One victory at Fratton Park.

Held it all together in the middle ground.

George Honeyman (Hull City)

Showed what he brings to the party with a classy performance at Portsmouth - and showed exactly what City missed when he had to sit out the reverse fixture in East Yorkshire.

More assists and a goal from one of the best midfielders in the division.

Alex Mowatt (Barnsley)

His future may be up in the air, but you would not have noticed on recent evidence.

Mowatt followed up his superb performance at Watford with another dominant and high-class display against Norwich. A real talisman.

Forwards

Billy Sharp (Sheffield United)

Produced a lovely assist for Chris Basham’s Cup opener against Plymouth and helped himself to a second key goal.

Typical Sharp.

Keane Lewis-Potter (Hull City)

With the ink barely dry on his new deal, Lewis-Potter produced an effervescent performance on the south coast and was involved in two of Hull’s four goals and created their second.

Pompey struggled to cope with the young tyro.

Manager/head coach

Grant McCann (Hull City)

Masterminded a keynote victory over a fellow promotion hopeful.
