Barnsley have no plans to sell rookies in January transfer window

BARNSLEY chief executive officer Dane Murphy has revealed that several key young players are attracting rival interest – but has reiterated the club’s desire to keep their squad together.

A number of emerging talents at Oakwell are showing signs of coming of age at Championship level and are on the radar of other clubs, according to Murphy.

After seeing many leading players leave the club in previous years, the fear among Barnsley supporters is that more could be sold in the January window.

Murphy has stressed that the club have no plans to sell – and are under no pressure to either – and do not see the sense in allowing any players to leave at such an important time in the season.

Murphy told The Yorkshire Post: “There are a few fair that have gained some interest. Not only on the back of last season, but the way we have played lately.

“There’s no official offers as of yet, but right now, there is not a mutual interest from our side. We want to keep our group together.

“It would not sense for us right now. From day one, we have said we want to keep this group together and see what this season looks like with one more season together and everyone grown up.

“Last year, it took us a little while to find that chemistry and a lot of guys were in their first year in the Championship.

“This year, we wanted to see what exactly would happen. To move anyone out would really impact on our success and it would not make sense.

“I am sure there will be more interest and more people will come in for our players, especially if we continue to win games up until January.

“But that is the nature of the beast and we have been able to plan in a way where we can keep hold of our best players and fend off interest.”

On the incoming front in January, the Reds are focusing on a couple of key areas, according to Murphy.

He added: “We find ourselves in a position where we are doing well and have a young core group and feel pretty good about the second half of the season if we can strengthen in a couple of areas. If we strengthen a little bit, who knows what will happen.

“We have prepared ourselves for January and we are hoping to get things secured and finished what we would want to add relatively soon.”
