Budget 2026: Latest as Chancellor announces £100 energy payment for households

The Chancellor has promised £100 payments for millions of UK homes in the first Budget of Andy Burnham’s premiership.

John Healey has announced a £100 household energy payment to people in council tax bands A to D to help them deal with soaring bills “through to the spring”.

The Chancellor will have limited scope for big giveaways due to stretched public finances, but changes aimed at easing the impact of rising costs will feature heavily, along with ‘everyday fixes’ on gas bills, electricity prices, mileage allowances, the minimum wage, and slashing tariffs on a range of foods including chocolate and gherkins.
