Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury's key message after strong opening to League One season

MANY League One observers consider Huddersfield Town's squad strength to be the strongest of any club at third-tier level in 2026-27.

Burton Albion manager Gary Bowyer recently referenced this following his side's home reverse to the Terriers.

That abundance of options can generate a problem in terms of it being nigh on impossible to satisfy everyone on a match-day.

In all competitions, Town have used 31 players already this season. Maintaining unity across such a big squad can have its challenges.

However, head coach Martin Drury has been particularly enthused by that aspect so far this term.

The sight of substitutes celebrating goals while sitting on the bench – alongside those in the stands – is not lost upon the Town head coach, whose in-form side visit fellow high-fliers Bradford City on Saturday.

A total of 15 players have already found the net in the current campaign for Huddersfield, who head to Valley Parade on the back of a three-match winning sequence at league level.

All told, Drury's side have won five of their last six matches in all competitions.

In 15 appointments so far in 26-27, Town have won nine times, losing just once.

Drury said: “If we want to be successful, then everybody's going to have to contribute. No 11 players can win or be successful over the course of a season. We're fortunate to have a good group and subs and players not involved that we feel still can really contribute to games when they come in and when they are involved.

“That's a by-product of us working hard in training every day and ensuring that players are ready when opportunities arise.

“You could see in the game against Peterborough with the (unused) subs that when we scored goals; the way they celebrated tells you a lot about where the group is at. I loved it and that's really pleasing.

“It's going to be a real key part of our season in terms of how we work together and how connected we are. And that's not just players, that's staff, supporters and everybody wrapped around the club. There's going to be some dips within this season and there are times when we have to really stay together.”
