Budget 2026: Latest as Chancellor set to hand powers to Yorkshire mayors

The Chancellor is set to hand extra funding to Yorkshire mayors as part of a financial devolution package in the 2026 Budget.

South Yorkshire MP John Healey will outline a £285m package for local communities in his first Budget as Chancellor.

Andy Burnham said the package will mean local mayors no longer have to go ‘cap in hand to Westminster’.

The Chancellor will have limited scope for big Budget giveaways due to stretched public finances, caused in part by increased Government borrowing resulting from the Iran war.

Changes aimed at easing the impact of rising costs will feature heavily in the Budget, along with ‘everyday fixes’ on gas bills, electricity prices, mileage allowances, the minimum wage, and slashing tariffs on a range of foods including chocolate and gherkins.
