'In my opinion' - Ex-referee delivers verdict on Jayden Bogle decision in Leeds United's draw with Sunderland

A former Premier League referee has assessed a decision made in Leeds United’s goalless draw with Sunderland

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett does not believe Jayden Bogle should have been sent off in Leeds United’s goalless draw with Sunderland.

In a low-quality game hampered by tough weather conditions, the Whites and the Black Cats shared the spoils at the Stadium of Light yesterday (October 25).

Leeds wing-back Bogle was shown a yellow card in the second half for a foul on Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava.

Many of the home supporters felt Bogle was deserving of an early bath, but referee Stuart Attwell produced a yellow card rather than a red.

Hackett has backed Attwell’s decision, although insisted the challenge from Bogle was “reckless”.

He told MOT Leeds News: “Throughout the game the strong wind made conditions difficult for players and the referee.

“In my opinion, referee Attwell, who is no stranger to the strict application of the law, made allowances for the weather conditions.

“There was no malice in this challenge but it was reckless. A yellow card for a reckless challenge would have been appropriate.”

Daniel Farke on Leeds United’s Sunderland stalemate

Leeds lacked quality in the final third against the Black Cats and have now drawn five of their opening eight Premier League games.

Post-match, Whites boss Daniel Farke said: “It was one of those days where you have to accept that you can't shine that much football-wise.

“We more or less had to dig in and grind out the result and fight for second balls and show steal. This is what we did.

“In our situation, second year back at Premier League level, to travel back with the point and also with the clean sheet, it's always a good result.

“I think it's also fair to say that you could see that we had a difficult training week offensive-wise because several offensive players just back on the training pitch on Saturday in our final session, not before, we could hardly work on our processes.”
