Karl Bushby: Yorkshire adventurer to receive heroes welcome as he returns to Hull after 28-year journey home

Yorkshire adventurer Karl Bushby is set to be met by crowds of people on his return home from an intrepid 28-year journey around the world.

Karl set out from Punta Arenas, Chile, on November 1, 1998, with the goal of making his way back to his mother's home in Hull along one continuous route without using transport to make forward progress.

On October 5 he finally landed back on UK shores after swimming the English Channel, and has since been making his way north toward Hull.

He is set to arrive in his home city on Monday (Nov 2) and the city council has organised an event to welcome him back.

On the final leg of his journey - and penultimate stop-off in the city centre before he continues home - Karl will make his way into Queen Victoria Square.

Karl is set to make his way eastwards into the city centre before arriving at Queen Victoria Square at around 11am.

There he will be welcomed by the Hull Volunteers, while Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Maria Coward, will invite him onto a stage to be presented to the crowds.

After a brief reception at the city hall, Karl will then complete the very final leg of his journey towards his family home, heading north.

Coun Coward said: “So many people have followed Karl on his epic journey. We have all felt inspired by his spirit, tenacity and dogged determination to carry on in challenges faced by the most fearless of explorers. We all share pride in his incredible achievement.

“We also know what it’s like to come home to Hull, that feeling as your car or train, or feet in Karl's case, crosses or goes under the Humber Bridge and over the city boundary. As the world’s media and documentary crews gather in our city we can show them how proud we are of Karl’s achievement and how proud we are to be from Hull.”
