'Under no illusions' - Ernie Weaver shares message after start for Sheffield Wednesday in Cambridge United draw
Ernie Weaver has issued a message following Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Cambridge United
Sheffield Wednesday defender Ernie Weaver has admitted he will “struggle to forget” his first league start in over a year.
The 20-year-old is well thought of in South Yorkshire but has seen his first-team opportunities limited by injury.
He was handed his first league start in over a year last night (October 27), completing 90 minutes as Wednesday drew 1-1 with Cambridge United.

Ernie Weaver’s message after draw
The young Owls prospect has taken to social media to reflect on the game, admitting to mixed emotions.
Posting on Instagram, he said: “Under no illusions that that performance was anywhere near the levels it should be, individually and collectively, not getting all three points.
“However, a first league start in 388 days and a night at Hillsborough I will struggle to forget.”
Ernie Weaver’s comeback
Weaver recently came close to a loan move away from South Yorkshire, only for the Owls to decide against sanctioning an exit.
His solid display will have made the Hillsborough faithful glad he was kept around - and may just keep him in the first-team picture.

When Weaver made his return from injury in the summer, since-sacked Owls boss Henrik Pedersen said: “For Ernie, it has been a tough, tough journey. Last season, he had some really good games, then the injury. It was an old injury. Now, he’s coming back and a young man like him, he has big expectations.
“To find out that the intensity we have in daily training, you cannot compare with last season. He got a shock in the training. To adapt in this, and he has done this now for 10/15 days, but it’s still very, very diffcult for him. But he is swimming and his mentality is top.”
