Brown insists he could have saved Hull City

HULL CITY's former manager Phil Brown is adamant that he could have kept the club in the Premier League.

Brown was put on 'gardening leave' by the Tigers in March and his replacement Iain Dowie failed to steer the club to safety in the remaining nine games.

Now, after settling a compensation dispute with the club, Brown is seeking a fresh opportunity to lead another club into the top flight.

"Hindsight management is a nonsense," said Brown yesterday. "But obviously, I believe in myself, I believed in (assistant) Brian Horton, the backroom staff and the players. I thought we could have certainly survived in the Premier League."

The Tigers could have avoided the drop by picking up 11 points from the final nine games but managed only six and suffered defeats against Portsmouth and Burnley – who were also relegated – along the way.

"With nine games to go, we had 24 points and 35 points would have been enough," said Brown. "It was not beyond the realms of possibility."
