Callum Marshall impresses Michael Duff with his Huddersfield Town attitude

IT wasn't Huddersfield Town loanee Callum Marshall's first goal in Terriers colours or his fine assist that caught Michael Duff's eye the most in his side's Carabao Cup stroll against Morecambe, but something else.

The teenager, on a season-long loan from West Ham, whet the appetite with some quality contributions.

Duff, whose side welcome Stevenage in their home league opener on Saturday, said: "He got absolutely smashed 10 foot in the air and just got up. He's a proper Belfast boy in that he's a tough little lad!

"He showed what we brought him in for. Energy, quality and he is a natural goalscorer. He's scored a lot of goals at lower levels.

"But goalscorers are goalscorers. It's whether he can step up - he struggled in the Championship but it's a big jump from under-23s football to the top end for a young lad.

"It's good (first goal) for him integrating into the group. With respect, he's not a household name so the players don't really know who he is. Now they will think 'well, he's not bad' and they will welcome him into the group even quicker, which creates competition.

"He is infectious, energetic and has got some quality. He will be better for the goal as his last loan didn’t work for him. He’s had a start here and got a goal.”

Duff, who made eight changes, also praised opening goalscorer Jaheim Headley, while revealing that a firm chat with the left-sided player in close season seems to have delivered a response.

He added: "I think Jaheim was excellent and is really pushing. I had quite a firm conversation with Jaheim before pre-season started and told him ‘this is how I work, this is what it’ll look like – if it’s too hard for you, don’t bother coming in.’

"He’s taken it and his training has been better. But it’s every day, you can’t just go ‘I’m going to rock up and I’m playing today, so I’ll just turn up.’ It should be just a habit.

"One of the things I said to the players was that every time you come into work, put your kit on and Huddersfield badge and deliver. Don't decide 'oh, it's only the League Cup, there's only two thousand here'. Do what you do, it's having the mentality.

"These daily habits are becoming better and better."
