'Dirtiest' teams in the Championship - where Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United rank

The second tier of English football has a reputation for being physical.

An often unforgiving division, the Championship’s rough and tumble has proven too much for an array of talented players over the years. It is among the appealing factors for fans, who also love its unpredictable nature.

Some of the division’s most physical battles in recent years have taken place in Yorkshire and the county has five Championship representatives this season.

Sheffield United have made a return following their relegation from the Premier League and have made an impressive start. Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, are still in the second tier following their great escape last term.

Leeds United, Hull City and Middlesbrough all targeted promotion last season but fell short, but have hopes of challenging near the summit in May.

With Championship football set to resume following the international break, The Yorkshire Post have taken a look at the division’s ‘dirtiest’ teams, based on Transfermarkt data.

The table has been put together using a points system, with a yellow card counting as one, a yellow-red card as three and a red card as five.
