Doncaster Rovers boss reveals blow regarding Aston Villa loanee plus updates on Alfie May and James Collins

DONCASTER Rovers manager Grant McCann remains hopeful that Alfie May could return for Saturday’s League One trip to MK Dons – but has suffered a blow regarding midfielder Tommi O’Reilly.

The Aston Villa attacking midfielder, who joined Rovers on a season-long loan in late August, made his comeback from an injury issue in last weekend’s derby victory over Sheffield Wednesday, but he has picked up a knock in training and is likely to be out for a few weeks.

Loan striker James Collins, who is on the rehabilitation trail following a long-term knee problem – and is yet to feature for Rovers – is progressing well, in a better development for the Rovers chief.

On the available of May, who missed the midweek game at Luton Town with a calf problem, for this weekend’s appointment in Buckinghamshire, McCann said: "We’re hoping so. We will see how he is over the next day or two, but he’s improving.

"He had a scan on his calf on Monday and the scan report came back saying ‘all clear’, which is good. It’s similar to Tom Nixon’s a few weeks back.

"It’s just a matter of days really and when Alfie is feeling good. But he’s okay.

"Tommi O’Reilly is going to be out for a bit. Unfortunately, he took a knock in training and we probably won’t see him until after the (November) international break, which is disappointing for us and Tommi was just getting to the levels that we wanted him to get to.

"James Collins is very close and we will see him probably back in our building after the international break. James Husband is working hard to try and get back, but everyone else seems to be ok (for MK Dons).
