Plenty of lower-league supporters would have been hoping the Football League Trophy was sacrificed in this season’s tighter post-Covid schedule but Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Moore insists he will be taking it seriously against a Bradford City side he sees as strong League Two promotion contenders.

The sides meet at the Keepmoat Stadium at 7.30pm in the first of three group games for each. “You try to treat every game at this football club with the right mentality so that’s been no different,” said the former Bantams defender.

“We know that Bradford are a good team who have been getting progressively better over the pre-season programme, a bit like ourselves. Both teams took a good look at each in pre-season.

“Stuart (McCall)’s got them well organised, well drilled, they’re an energetic team, a very fit team that asks you questions. They’ve two lads up top who are a handful and they’re capable.

“I fully expect them to be at the right end of League Two at the end of the season with their experience and their squad.”

With Josef Bursik on England Under-21 duty, Louis Jones is set to make his Doncaster debut, whilst Dylan Mottley-Henry could be back from an ankle injury for Bradford.

Moore insists good performances tonight could earn starts at home to Milton Keynes Dons in Saturday’s League One opener.

“I look at each game in an isolated manner,” he said. “All the attention goes into this game and after that I’ll look to the weekend. Otherwise you dilute each game.”
