Team news: Tom Anderson (concussion) and Fejiri Okenabirhie (ankle) will be assessed after recent lay-offs for Doncaster, who have James Coppinger fit again and Matt Smith rested up. Winger Gavin Whyte is expected to return to the Hull squad but striker Tom Eaves is not quite yet fit enough to be considered.

Key battle: Reece James v Mallik Wilks – having spent months touring the pitch playing different positions, Doncaster put Reece James back in his familiar left-back spot on Wednesday. He will need to be on his game against former Rover Wilks, who scored a hat-trick at Wigan Athletic that night.

Talking point: Would you rather have points on the board or games in hand? Most sages prefer the former, but despite a four-point lead, Doncaster’s three games in hand makes this a game second-placed Hull need to win. Rovers’ form dictates they must not lose.

Last time – Doncaster Rovers 2 Hull City 0, August 22, 2017, League Cup: Leonid Slutsky was made to pay for 11 changes, including six debuts. Alfie May scored for the fourth game running and, like Ben Whiteman, hit the woodwork. Tommy Rowe scored the other as a rotated Hull side managed just one shot on target.
